Management Development in Ireland - the Report of the Management Development Council

This report identifies areas for improvement in management practice amongst Irish SMEs. It concludes that improving management capability within SMEs through management development can lead to significant returns to the State in terms of increased Gross Value Added, increased employment, better business survival rates, and a more skilled workforce. The Council makes recommendations designed to increase participation in management development and to improve the quality of management development offered to SME managers. It also outlines the reforms required to put in place a sustainable national system for management development that will lead to a permanent increase in management capabilities amongst Irish SMEs.

Management Matters in Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland

Detailed investigative research into the management practices currently in use in the Republic of Ireland (ROI) and Northern Ireland (NI) was commissioned by the Management Development Council, Forfás, Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment, InvestNI, the Department for Employment and Learning, and Intertrade Ireland. The objectives of the research were to: compare the levels of managerial skills with those in other countries; identify areas of weakness in the management practices of manufacturing firms; identify the factors that may account for the differences; indicate where targeted improvements could improve performance and investigate whether similar issues also apply in tradable services firms. This report will provide an input to the final report of the Management Development Council.
